This workshop will discuss the impact of affordable high-speed Internet
access on Information Security. Ubiquitous high-speed Internet access is driving up consumer expectations of
services accessible via the Internet. This trend is forcing banks, on-line
retailers, and even the government to offer new, previously unavailable,
services over the Internet. Very often, the convenience of conducting
financial and other transactions from home carry significant underlying
risks.
The international criminal community is well aware that the average at-home
user does not have a high level of security awareness. Most home users are
unable to recognize sophisticated threats in the form of phishing, malware,
rootkits, etc.
In addition to compromising home user systems to obtain personal and
financial information, Internet criminals are taking advantage of high
access speeds, and are using home-user systems as a stepping stone for
attacking other targets.
Government aside, the financial industry is usually most sensitive to
security issues and the first to respond and mitigate new threats. Due to
increasing on-line based ID theft and financial fraud, major credit card
companies have developed information security guidelines for any company or
organization that process cardholder data. Over the last few years these
guidelines have evolved into globally recognized PCI Data Security Standards
(DSS).
This workshop will discuss PCI DSS requirements; namely how these
requirements can be achieved and maintained.
